Benbecula is the smallest of the three main islands in the Uist chain and carries most of its services. It sits in the middle of a run of islands joined by causeway, from Berneray and North Uist in the north to South Uist and Eriskay in the south, so the chain is one drive; the causeways were built between 1942 and 2001. Balivanich, on the west side, is a Main Settlement in the Local Development Plan and holds the Comhairle's southern isles office, the airport and the Uist and Barra Hospital. Sgoil Lionacleit, the secondary school for the whole of Uist and Benbecula, is a short way south at Liniclate. Balivanich is bigger than its island would suggest because of the missile testing range built in the islands between 1957 and 1958, now run by QinetiQ for the Ministry of Defence. The transport strategy records five flights a week year round to Glasgow and three to Inverness, and a public service obligation flight to Stornoway funded by the Comhairle. Most of what is advertised in the chain is one house built by or for its owner, in a township. The Uists and Benbecula guide has the detail and its sources.
