Houses and property for sale on the Isle of Barra
Barra is reached by ferry from Oban or Eriskay, or by the only scheduled airline service in the world that lands on a beach, its timetable set by the tide. 5 properties are for sale on the Isle of Barra today, from 4 agents, across 1 area of the Outer Hebrides — the Western Isles.
Barra had 1,174 residents at the 2011 census and Vatersay 90, and the two are joined by causeway. A single ring road follows the coast, with the hill in the middle and the settlement round the edge. Castlebay, on the south coast, is where the Oban ferry berths, and the development plan names Greater Castlebay as one of the islands' six Main Settlements. One of the Comhairle's four offices is there, Castlebay Community School is the island's combined primary and secondary, and St Brendan's Hospital shares a building with a local authority care home. Ardmhor in the north east is where the Sound of Barra ferry from Eriskay comes in, linking Barra to the causeway chain of the Uists. Barra Airport lands on the tidal beach at Traigh Mhòr, so the timetable moves with the tide, and the Comhairle's own transport strategy calls the Oban crossing the longest and most weather dependent route in the network. Little comes up for sale here at any one time, and a share of what does is croft land or a house on a croft, so a buyer usually waits rather than chooses. The Barra and Vatersay guide has the detail and its sources.
