Schools, health and everyday services in the Outer Hebrides
There are four secondary schools and three hospitals across the whole of the Outer Hebrides. Which township a house sits in decides how far a child travels each morning, and how far an ambulance travels in the other direction.
In brief
- Four schools provide secondary education: the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, Sir E Scott School in Tarbert, Sgoil Lionacleit on Benbecula and Castlebay Community School on Barra, two of them combined primary and secondary schools.
- Gaelic Medium Education is the default enrolment, and a parent who does not want it must request English Medium Education on the enrolment form.
- NHS Western Isles runs three hospitals, at Stornoway, on Benbecula and at Castlebay, with nine GP practices across fourteen sites.
Schools, and the four secondaries
The Comhairle runs every state school in the islands and publishes a directory. Secondary provision comes down to four buildings.
- The Nicolson Institute, Sgoil MhicNeacail, Stornoway. Secondary only.
- Sir E Scott School, Sgoil an Tairbeirt, Tarbert. Primary and secondary in one school.
- Sgoil Lionacleit, at Liniclate on Benbecula. Secondary, and the only one in the Uists and Benbecula.
- Castlebay Community School, Sgoil Bhàgh a' Chaisteil, Barra. Primary and secondary in one.
Primary schools are more numerous and more local. The directory lists them island by island: on Lewis, Back, Breasclete, Laxdale, Lionel, Pàirc, Sgoil an Rubha, Sgoil an Taobh Siar, Sgoil nan Loch, Shawbost, Stornoway Primary, Tong and Uig; on Harris, Leverhulme School at Leverburgh and the primary department at Sir E Scott; on North Uist, Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath; on Benbecula, Sgoil Bhaile a' Mhanaich; on South Uist, Sgoil an Ìochdair and Sgoil Dhalabroig at Daliburgh; and on Barra, Eoligarry and the primary department at Castlebay.
For a buyer, the shape of that matters more than any individual school. A primary is usually within a few miles of a township; a secondary may not be. A house at either end of the Uists is a long daily journey from Liniclate, and Harris pupils in the Bays travel to Tarbert. The Comhairle publishes catchment areas school by school, and a placing request is the route to a school outside your catchment. Check the catchment before you offer, not after.
Gaelic is the default, not the option
This is the fact most likely to surprise a buyer from elsewhere, and the Comhairle states it plainly: "The default enrolment for all children is into Gaelic Medium Education (GME)." It adds that "If you do not wish to enrol your child into GME, you must ensure that you request English Medium Education on the enrolment form."
Enrolment runs to a formal window. For children reaching the age of four by 28 February 2027, enrolment for P1 starting in August 2027 opens on Monday 1 February 2027 and closes on Friday 5 March 2027, and S1 enrolment opens on the same dates. None of that is a reason to buy or not buy; it is a reason to read the enrolment page before a move rather than after one, because a move made in June lands after the window has closed.
Health: three hospitals and nine practices
- Western Isles Hospital, Stornoway, opened in 1992, which the board describes as having a range of hospital acute specialties and psychiatry, with diagnostic facilities, a day hospital, a laboratory and allied health professionals.
- Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh, the Uist and Barra Hospital on Benbecula: a local service for the southern isles, with care of the elderly and GP acute and midwifery led maternity services.
- St Brendan's Hospital, Castlebay, in a shared building with a local authority care home, supported by the local GP practice for care of the elderly and other services.
The acute hospital is therefore in Stornoway, and for a household in Uist or Barra the specialist route runs off the island: that is what the ferry and flight timetables mean for anyone with an ongoing condition.
General practice is more evenly spread. The board states that there are nine GP practices across fourteen sites: two in Stornoway, one at Leurbost on Lewis, one at West Tarbert and one at Leverburgh on Harris, one at Lochmaddy, one on Benbecula, one at Daliburgh and one on Barra. Dental care runs on a smaller footprint, with four clinics: Stornoway, Tarbert, the Uist and Barra Hospital at Balivanich, and St Brendan's on Barra. The board directs patients in Harris, the Uists, Benbecula and Barra who need dental registration to their own local clinic, and patients on Lewis to an independent practice in Stornoway providing both NHS and private treatment. Ask about registration before committing.
Shops, fuel and post offices
The Local Development Plan is the clearest public statement of how retail works here. It names Stornoway as the primary administrative centre and the main retail and service centre within Lewis and Harris, and describes rural settlements as serving local needs through schools, community halls, small shops and post offices. It also carries a policy resisting the loss of key retail and service facilities, which tells you those are regarded as fragile.
The main settlements are where the larger shops are and the rural settlements where the small ones are, which is as far as a public source goes. Which shops, fuel stations, banks and post offices are open, and where, is a question for the selling agent and for a viewing trip.
Council services, libraries and leisure
The Comhairle keeps four offices, at Stornoway, Tarbert, Balivanich and Castlebay, and asks that people confirm an appointment in advance rather than calling in. It runs four sports centres, on Lewis, Harris, Benbecula and Barra, with a membership scheme alongside passes for visitors.
The council's consultation material on the library service refers to libraries across Lewis, Harris and Uist, names Lionacleit and describes mobile libraries as essential, but it reaches no further south than Uist and a current list of branches is not published.
What the distance actually means when choosing a township
Which secondary, and how far? If there are children in the household, find the school first and the house second: the four secondaries are fixed points and everything else moves around them.
How far to the nearest GP site and the nearest hospital? Fourteen GP sites spread general practice widely across the islands, but the acute hospital is one building in Stornoway, and the journey to it from Barra or Uist is a boat or a flight.
Listings on this site carry a panel giving the straight line distance to Stornoway and to the nearest ferry terminal with its crossing, which is the quickest way to place a house against the services above. The area guides for Lewis and Harris, the Uists and Benbecula and Barra and Vatersay set out the districts in more detail. The full list of what is advertised is on the for sale page, with the map alongside it.
