Houses and property for sale in North Uist
North Uist is more water than land, a low island stitched through with freshwater lochs and joined by causeway to Berneray in the north and Benbecula in the south. 35 properties are for sale in North Uist today, from 8 agents, across 1 area of the Outer Hebrides — the Western Isles. 7 have cut the asking price since we started watching.
North Uist is the northern of the three main islands in the Uist chain, and the transport strategy's list of causeway links puts Berneray and Baleshare on its road. The island is flat and low, machair on the west and lochs and rock on the east, and had 1,254 residents at the 2011 census. Lochmaddy, on the east coast, is the ferry port for Skye and a Main Settlement in the Local Development Plan, a category the plan defines as key ports of entry and rural service centres serving wider island needs; the crossing from Uig takes an hour and three quarters, and the strategy records significant timetabling and capacity issues on it, with evidence of unmet demand. Berneray, off the north end, is where the Sound of Harris ferry lands from Leverburgh, an hour's crossing and the boat link between Harris and the Uists, since there is no road between the two. The council keeps no office on North Uist, so council business goes to Balivanich or Stornoway, and the hospital, the airport and the secondary school are on Benbecula, down the causeway. Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath is the primary school, and one of the health board's nine GP practices is at Lochmaddy. North Uist is one of the eight Outer Hebrides crofting parishes the Crofting Commission counts separately, and many of the houses advertised here sit on croft ground. The Uists and Benbecula guide has the detail and its sources.
