Houses and property for sale on the Isle of Lewis
Lewis is the northern two thirds of a single island it shares with Harris, and Stornoway on its east coast is the only town in the Outer Hebrides. 351 properties are for sale on the Isle of Lewis today, from 12 agents, across 7 areas of the Outer Hebrides — the Western Isles. 27 have cut the asking price since we started watching.
Lewis and Harris are one landmass with two names, joined by road from the Butt of Lewis to Rodel. Lewis is the northern two thirds, low and peaty, with settlement strung along the coast road in townships. Stornoway is the only town, and the Local Development Plan calls it the central administrative and commercial centre for the Outer Hebrides: the hospital, the secondary school and the council headquarters are there, and so is the islands' main port. Property adverts use the older district names, and this site groups its listings under them: Point, the peninsula east of Stornoway; Back and Broad Bay, north east along the coast to North Tolsta; Ness, the far north round the Butt of Lewis; the Westside, the west coast road from Barvas to Carloway; Uig and Bernera, the western peninsula; and Lochs, south of Stornoway on the way to Harris, with Stornoway and its surrounding area as the seventh. Great Bernera is bridged to Lewis. Stornoway's ferry goes to Ullapool, and the 2020 transport strategy records flights from Stornoway to Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh. Very few houses here come from volume builders: the plan puts around 70 per cent of house builds as individual developments on windfall sites, and over two thirds of the land is in crofting tenure, so the word croft turns up constantly in adverts. The Lewis and Harris guide has the detail and its sources.
