About Achmore
Achmore is a crofting village in the middle of Lewis, about 7 miles west south west of Stornoway on the road that carries on to Callanish and Carloway. The Gazetteer for Scotland records the site of an ancient stone circle nearby, 41 metres in radius, which peat cutting uncovered in the 1930s.
For everyday life the village looks two ways. Its primary school is Sgoil nan Loch at Leurbost, whose catchment the council lists as taking in Achmore, while the W2 Westside circular bus from Stornoway stops here on its way out to Callanish, Carloway, Shawbost and Barvas. Teenagers travel to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, the secondary for the whole of Lewis.
Achmore belongs to the crofting parish of Lochs, and the Crofting Commission's open data lists 35 crofts under it. With that many crofts, it is worth settling early whether an advert is selling a croft tenancy, an owner occupied croft or a house on ground that has been taken out of crofting.
