About Back
Back (Am Bac in Gaelic) is a crofting township on the east coast of Lewis, about 6 miles north east of Stornoway, with Coll to its south west and Gress to the north. Agents use the name generously: houses in Vatisker, Lighthill and Coll are often advertised with Back in the address, so it is worth checking which village a listing is actually in.
Back School teaches primary pupils from a long stretch of this coast; the council gives its catchment as Back, Coll, Gress, Vatisker, New Tolsta and North Tolsta, and it offers Gaelic medium classes. Older pupils go in to the Nicolson Institute. The W5A bus between Stornoway, Tong, Back and Tolsta has stops at the garage, the school, the church, Lighthill and New Street. The Gazetteer for Scotland dates the Free Church here to 1891.
The Crofting Commission's open data lists 69 crofts under Back, in the parish of Stornoway. Community Land Scotland describes the Stornoway Trust's estate as including that parish, and the Trust, which says Lord Leverhulme gifted it the land in 1923, calls itself Scotland's oldest community land trust.
