About Barvas

Barvas (Barbhas) is a crofting township on the north west coast of Lewis, on the River Barvas about 11 miles north west of Stornoway. The Gazetteer for Scotland describes it as Barvas itself with Upper Barvas to the north north east and Lower Barvas to the west, beside Loch More Barvas. Barvas Junction is a stop on both the W1 Ness bus and the W2 Westside circular.

Sgoil an Taobh Siar, the Westside primary, is in Barvas, and its catchment takes in Brue, Shader, Ballantrushal, Borve, Melbost Borve and Galson. Pupils then go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. Historic Environment Scotland lists the Church of Scotland here at category B, and the Free Church near Lower Barvas and Barvas Lodge at category C.

In the Crofting Commission's open data Lower Barvas, Upper Barvas and Barvas Park hold 85 crofts between them. Upper Barvas is the first of the 22 villages of the Galson Estate, which runs from there to Port of Ness and has been in community ownership since January 2007.
