About Bernera

Bernera, or Great Bernera (Beàrnaraigh), is an island in Loch Roag off the west coast of Lewis, about a mile north west of Callanish and joined to Lewis by a bridge that the Gazetteer for Scotland dates to 1953. It measures roughly 3¾ miles by 3. Breaclete is the main settlement, in the middle, with Hacklete, Kirkibost, Valasay, Tobson and Croir round it. The Gazetteer counted 252 people at the 2011 census and names salmon farming and shellfish processing as important to the local economy. A cairn marks the Bernera Riot, the crofters' revolt of 1874.

The council's directory has no school on the island itself: Bernera is in the catchment of Breasclete School across on Lewis, and secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute. The W3 bus runs from Stornoway by Garynahine and over the bridge, calling at Kirkibost, Breaclete, Hacklete, Tobson and Croir on its way to Bosta.

The island is in the crofting parish of Uig. The Crofting Commission's open data lists 99 crofts across Kirkibost, Tobson, Hacklete, Breaclete and Croir. Beside the bridge stand the Bernera Bridge standing stones, a scheduled monument since 1993 and considered part of the Callanish complex.
