About Berneray

Berneray (Beàrnaraigh) sits at the northern tip of North Uist and is joined to it by a causeway, though the Gazetteer for Scotland notes that it forms part of the parish of Harris. It is the only inhabited island in the Sound of Harris, with 138 people at the 2011 census, and covers about 1,010 hectares. Settlement is mostly on the east side, at Borve and Rushgarry.

It is also where the Sound of Harris ferry lands: CalMac runs the Berneray to Leverburgh route, and the pier sits about half a mile south of Borve beside the causeway. The W16 bus from Balivanich and Lochmaddy ends at the slipway and the youth hostel, and the W18 North Uist circular comes over the causeway too.

The island's own primary closed in 2005, according to the Gazetteer, and the council now lists the Island of Berneray in the catchment of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath. NHS Western Isles lists North Uist's GP practice at Lochmaddy. Historic Environment Scotland lists MacLeod's Gunnery at Rushgarry, a barn and byre, at category A, and several buildings at Rushgarry at category B. The Crofting Commission files 54 crofts at Borve and Rushgarry under the parish of Harris.
