About Borve

There are at least four places called Borve in the Outer Hebrides, and adverts for three of them tend to land on this page: on Lewis, on Berneray and on Barra. The Gazetteer for Scotland also has a fourth, on the west coast of South Harris. The postcode tells them apart: Lewis addresses begin HS2, Berneray's HS6 and Barra's HS9.

Borve on Lewis (Borgh) lies on the Abhainn Bhuirgh, midway between Barvas and the Butt of Lewis, and is really a group of townships: Five Penny Borve, Melbost Borve, High Borve and Mid Borve. Fivepenny Borve, High Borve and Melbost are among the villages of the Galson Estate, community owned since 2007. The W1 Ness bus stops at Borve Church and the Melbost Borve turn, and the primary is Sgoil an Taobh Siar in Barvas. The Crofting Commission lists 57 crofts at Fivepenny Borve and 9 at Mid Borve.

Borve on Berneray is a scattered crofting township between Borve Hill and Loch Borve, half a mile from the causeway and the Leverburgh ferry. Borve on Barra is a crofting township on the west coast, about 2 miles north north west of Castlebay, with a pair of standing stones by the road; it is in the catchment of Castlebay Community School.
