About Callanish
Callanish (Callanais) is a village on the west coast of Lewis at the head of East Loch Roag, about 13 miles west of Stornoway. On a low ridge beside it stand the Callanish stones, which the Gazetteer for Scotland counts among Scotland's most spectacular prehistoric ceremonial centres: a small circle of 13 standing stones with four rows running off it, and a central pillar 4.75 metres tall beside a small chambered tomb.
The village is part of the Carloway Estate, which passed into community ownership on 1 May 2015. Its trust, Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh, gives the estate as 11,500 acres with over 200 crofts across Callanish, Breasclete, Breasclete Park, Tolsta Chaolais, Doune Carloway, Kirivick and Knock Carloway. The Crofting Commission counts 48 crofts under Callanish itself, in the parish of Uig.
Primary pupils go to Breasclete School, whose catchment the council lists as including Callanish, and secondary pupils to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W2 Westside circular bus stops at the Callanish centre and on the main road, in both directions round the loop.
