About Coll

Coll is a crofting township on the east side of Lewis, about 5½ miles north east of Stornoway. The Gazetteer for Scotland notes that Upper Coll lies to its south west, separated from it by two streams, the River Coll and the Gil Thaisader, and adverts often add Back to a Coll address because Back is the next village along.

It is a big township by island standards. The Crofting Commission's open data lists 83 crofts at Coll and another 49 at Upper Coll, and only Newmarket and North Tolsta have more in the eight island parishes. Both Coll townships are filed under the parish of Stornoway, which Community Land Scotland says the Stornoway Trust's community owned estate includes.

Primary pupils go to Back School, whose catchment the council gives as Back, Coll, Gress, Vatisker and the two Tolstas, and older pupils to the Nicolson Institute. The W5A bus from Stornoway to Tong, Back and Tolsta has stops at both Upper Coll and Coll.
