About Garenin
Garenin (Na Geàrrannan) is a crofting township on the west coast of Lewis, about 1¼ miles north west of Carloway. Its oldest houses, closest to the shore, have been restored as the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village, which the Gazetteer for Scotland says includes a youth hostel, a museum and an interpretation centre. Historic Environment Scotland lists the blackhouse village at category B.
The Crofting Commission spells the township Garinin and lists 31 crofts under it, in the parish of Uig. It is not one of the townships the neighbouring Carloway Estate Trust names on its own estate, so the croft register is the place to check who holds any croft here.
Secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The council's W2A Carloway local bus runs from Stornoway out to Garenin and Upper Carloway, with stops at Garenin village and Garenin Uraghag, and the W2 Westside evening service also reaches it.
