About Grimshader

Grimshader is a linear crofting village in the Lochs district of Lewis, strung out along a minor road on the north side of Loch Grimshader, about 5 miles south south west of Stornoway.

The council lists Grimshader in the catchment of Sgoil nan Loch at Leurbost, and its W8A feeder bus links Grimshader village with the school, the Lochs surgery and Stornoway. The main W8 route to Ranish stops at the Grimshader turn. NHS Western Isles lists a GP practice, Langabhat Medical Practice, at Leurbost. The secondary is the Nicolson Institute.

Open data from the Crofting Commission shows 21 crofts at Grimshader, in the parish of Lochs, so a house advertised here may be on a croft or on a decrofted site beside one, and the two are bought in quite different ways.

One planning matter to know about: RWE is developing a proposed Grimshader Wind Farm on the Soval Estate. The Scottish Government's Energy Consents Unit issued a scoping opinion in March 2024 for up to 19 turbines of up to 200 metres to the tip, and RWE's project page now describes 15 turbines of that height, about 99 megawatts, still in development. Check the project's current status before buying.
