About Lionel
Lionel (Lìonal) is one of the cluster of crofting townships in Ness, at the northern tip of Lewis. The Gazetteer for Scotland places it immediately north east of Habost and south west of Port of Ness.
It gives its name to Lionel School, the primary for the whole of Ness; the council lists the school's catchment as running from Cross, Dell and Swainbost up through Habost, Lionel and Eoropie to Port of Ness, Skigersta and the Butt. Secondary pupils travel to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W1 bus from Stornoway stops at the Lionel junction and at Edgemoor Square, and the W1A Ness feeder calls at the school.
Lionel is one of the 22 townships of the Galson Estate, which the Galson Estate Trust says has been in community ownership since 12 January 2007 and runs to 56,000 acres. Crofting Commission figures give 43 crofts at Lionel, in the parish of Barvas.
