About Lochmaddy

Lochmaddy (Loch nam Madadh) is the chief settlement and port of North Uist, on its north east coast. The Gazetteer for Scotland says it grew as a fishing centre and port in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today it is principally a ferry port: CalMac sails between Uig on Skye and Lochmaddy. The Gazetteer also names Taigh Chearsabhagh, the museum and arts centre in an 18th century merchant's house, among what the village has.

Several of its buildings are listed. Historic Environment Scotland lists the old courthouse with its exercise yard walls and the former inn at category B, and the Sheriff Court at category C.

NHS Western Isles lists the North Uist Medical Practice in Lochmaddy. The council puts Lochmaddy in the catchment of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath, the island's primary, and secondary pupils go to Sgoil Lionacleit on Benbecula. The W16 spine bus stops at Lochmaddy pier on its way between Balivanich and Berneray, and the W18 circulars round the north west of the island call at the pier too. The Crofting Commission's open data lists 12 crofts at Lochmaddy itself.
