About New Shawbost
New Shawbost (A' Phàirc) is a linear crofting settlement on the north west coast of Lewis, forming the southern extension of Shawbost (Siabost), about 4 miles north east of Carloway.
Shawbost School is the primary here, and the council gives its catchment as Arnol, Bragar, Dalbeg, Shawbost, Carloway, Dalmore and Doune Carloway, and it offers Gaelic medium classes. Secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute. The W2 Westside circular, which loops from Stornoway by Callanish, Carloway, Shawbost and Barvas and back, has a stop named New Shawbost as well as one at the school, and the W2A Carloway local calls at Shawbost School too. In Shawbost, Historic Environment Scotland lists the museum and the bridge at category C, and a clapper bridge in North Shawbost at category B.
The Commission's register data has 35 crofts at New Shawbost, in the parish of Barvas, with 56 more at South Shawbost and 58 at North Shawbost.
