About Newmarket
Newmarket is a village about 2 miles north of Stornoway, immediately north of Laxdale and separated from it by the River Laxdale. Some adverts give its houses a Stornoway address.
It has more crofts than any other island township in the Crofting Commission's open data, which lists 113 at Newmarket, filed under the parish of Stornoway, well ahead of North Tolsta's 84. Community Land Scotland describes the Stornoway Trust's community owned estate as including that parish.
Laxdale School, despite its name, has its address in Newmarket, and the council gives its catchment as Guershader, Laxdale, Newmarket, Newvalley, Marybank and Bennadrove, and offers Gaelic medium classes. Older pupils move on to the Nicolson Institute. The W1 Ness, the W2 Westside circular and the W7 town service all stop at Newmarket and Benside, and the W7 links the village with Cearns, the Western Isles Hospital, which NHS Western Isles lists on MacAulay Road, and the bus station.
