About North Tolsta
North Tolsta is a crofting township on the east coast of Lewis, 2 miles west of Tolsta Head, at the far end of the W5A bus route that runs up from Stornoway through Tong, Coll and Back. Tolsta is Tolastadh in Gaelic. Beyond the village is the Garry Bridge, which Historic Environment Scotland lists at category B.
With 84 crofts in the Crofting Commission's open data, North Tolsta is the second largest township in the islands by that count, after Newmarket; New Tolsta has another 20. Both are filed under the parish of Stornoway, which Community Land Scotland says the Stornoway Trust's estate includes. Historic Environment Scotland also lists a blackhouse at New Tolsta at category C.
The council's directory no longer has a primary school in Tolsta: North Tolsta and New Tolsta are in the catchment of Back School, and secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute. The W5A bus serves the village, with stops at North Tolsta, the Tolsta school road, New Tolsta and Camach Park.
