About Portvoller
Portvoller (Port Mholair) is one of a run of settlements at the eastern end of the Eye Peninsula, the part of Lewis that adverts call Point. The Gazetteer for Scotland places it south of Cnoc Amhlaigh, half a mile east of Broker and about a mile south west of Tiumpan Head, whose lighthouse and attendant buildings Historic Environment Scotland lists at category C.
The W5 bus from Stornoway reaches Portvoller village near the end of its run, after Flesherin and Portnaguran pier and before Aird. Sgoil an Rubha at New Garrabost is the primary, with Gaelic medium classes, and the council names Portvoller in its catchment. Older pupils travel in to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway.
Crofting Commission figures give 20 crofts at Portvoller, filed under the parish of Stornoway. Community Land Scotland describes the Stornoway Trust's estate, the oldest community land trust in Scotland by its own account, as including that parish.
