About Sandwick
Sandwick (Sanndabhaig) is a crofting township on the edge of Stornoway, about a mile east south east of the town centre. The Gazetteer for Scotland describes Lower Sandwick round Stornoway Harbour, with the larger part of the village strung out along the arms of a crossroads a quarter of a mile to the north east, and Stornoway Airport a mile further on.
Sandwick is town for schooling: the council lists Sandwick and Parkend in the catchment of Stornoway Primary, which offers Gaelic medium classes, and the Nicolson Institute is the secondary. The W5 bus to Point stops at Plasterfield, Sandwick and Parkend on its way out to the airport, from which Loganair flies to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness.
It is still crofting ground, though: the Crofting Commission's open data lists 25 crofts under Sandwick in the parish of Stornoway, the parish that Community Land Scotland says the Stornoway Trust's estate includes.
