About Scalpay
Scalpay is an island off Harris, reached by the Scalpay Bridge. The main settlement is in the north west of the island, between North Harbour and South Harbour, about 4 miles south east of Tarbert according to the Gazetteer for Scotland. Historic Environment Scotland lists the Eilean Glas lighthouse, with its keepers' cottages and jetty, at category A.
The island is community owned. The Scottish Government's case study of the North Harris Trust records that in 2013 the islanders took up an offer from the then owner and asked to join the trust, and that Scalpay, 1,750 acres, was bought in September 2013. The Crofting Commission's open data lists 44 crofts on Scalpay, in the parish of Harris.
The Gazetteer notes that the island's primary closed in 2012, and the council now lists the Isle of Scalpay in the catchment of Sir E Scott School in Tarbert, which is also the secondary for Harris. The W14 bus runs between Tarbert and Scalpay, with stops at Scalpay village and Outend, and its timetable sets out the W10 connection from Tarbert to Stornoway.
