About Shader
Shader (Siadar) is a crofting township on the north west coast of Lewis, about 1¼ miles south west of Borve, with Lower Shader immediately south east and Upper Shader a quarter of a mile to the south west. Adverts use Shader for a wider stretch than that, including Ballantrushal and Airidhantuim.
Upper Shader, Lower Shader and Ballantrushal are all villages of the Galson Estate, which the Galson Estate Trust says has been community owned since 12 January 2007 and covers 56,000 acres. The Crofting Commission's open data lists 37 crofts in Upper Shader, 39 in Lower Shader and 22 at Ballantrushal, in the parish of Barvas.
The council names both Shader and Ballantrushal in the catchment of Sgoil an Taobh Siar at Barvas, which offers Gaelic medium classes, and secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W1 bus between Stornoway and Ness stops at Ballantrushal and at Airidhantuim.
