About Sollas
Sollas (Solas) is a crofting township at the northern end of North Uist, about 5 miles east of Griminish Point. The Gazetteer for Scotland notes a picnic area commemorating the clearance of crofters from the land in the 1840s, and Sollas Community Centre, which opened in 2012 in the former Dunskellar School. Addresses in Middlequarter and Malaclete are often given as Sollas, and Historic Environment Scotland lists Struan Cottage at Malaclete at category A.
The council names Sollas, Middlequarter and Malaclete in the catchment of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath, North Uist's primary, and secondary pupils go to Sgoil Lionacleit on Benbecula. NHS Western Isles lists the island's GP practice at Lochmaddy. The W18 North Uist circular bus, which runs round the north west of the island from Lochmaddy, stops at the Sollas Co-op in both directions.
The Crofting Commission counts 11 crofts at Sollas and 14 at Middlequarter, in the parish of North Uist.
