About South Bragar
South Bragar is the southern part of Bragar (Bradhagair), a sizeable crofting township on the north west coast of Lewis, 1¼ miles west south west of Arnol and 2 miles east north east of Shawbost. In the middle of the village stands the whalebone arch, which the Gazetteer for Scotland says was put up in 1920 from the jawbone of a whale beached nearby, and which Historic Environment Scotland lists at category B.
Open data from the Crofting Commission shows 64 crofts at South Bragar and 45 at North Bragar. South Bragar's count is the highest of any township in the parish of Barvas.
Bragar no longer has a school of its own in the council's directory: it is in the catchment of Shawbost School, and secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W2 Westside circular stops at South Bragar, the old Bragar school and North Bragar, and the W2A Carloway local also calls at South Bragar and Doune Bragar.
