About South Dell
South Dell (Dail fo Dheas) is a crofting township in Ness, on the left bank of the Dell River about 3 miles south of the Butt of Lewis and half a mile south west of North Dell. Historic Environment Scotland lists Muileann Nis, the Ness mill at Dell, at category B.
South Dell is one of the 22 villages of the Galson Estate, which the Galson Estate Trust says passed into community ownership on 12 January 2007 and covers 56,000 acres of coast, farmland and moor from Upper Barvas to Port of Ness. The Commission's register data has 48 crofts at South Dell and 22 at North Dell, in the parish of Barvas.
Dell is in the catchment of Lionel School, the primary for Ness, and secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W1 bus stops at the South Dell turn on the main road, and the W1A Ness feeder goes into South Dell and Aird Dell to connect with it.
