About Stornoway
Stornoway (Steòrnabhagh) is the administrative centre and only town of the Outer Hebrides, at the head of a sheltered harbour opening onto the North Minch. Adverts use the name widely, giving a Stornoway address to places outside the town such as Laxdale, Newvalley and Melbost.
NHS Western Isles lists the Western Isles Hospital on MacAulay Road and two GP practices in the town. The council's directory has Stornoway Primary on Jamieson Drive, Laxdale School at Newmarket, and the Nicolson Institute, the secondary for the whole of Lewis. CalMac sails from Stornoway to Ullapool, and Loganair flies to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. Most of the council's Lewis bus timetables begin or end at Stornoway bus station.
The Stornoway Trust, a community landlord, says Lord Leverhulme gifted it the land in 1923 and that its 69,000 acre estate takes in over 40 townships, 1,300 crofts and the Lews Castle grounds. The Gazetteer for Scotland records that Lews Castle, built for Sir James Matheson after he bought the island in 1844, became the home of Museum nan Eilean in 2015.
