About Tarbert
Tarbert (An Tairbeart) is the main port of Harris, on the narrow neck of land, about half a mile wide, that joins North Harris to South Harris. The Gazetteer for Scotland says it grew up round a steamer pier from the 1840s. CalMac's ferry from Uig on Skye comes in here.
Sir E Scott School in Tarbert takes nursery, primary and secondary pupils, and the council gives the whole of Harris as its secondary catchment. NHS Western Isles lists the North Harris Medical Practice at the North Harris Health Hub in West Tarbert. Historic Environment Scotland lists Tarbert primary school and schoolhouse and the Free Presbyterian church at category B.
Most Harris bus routes on the council's timetables run from Tarbert: the W10 goes to Balallan and Stornoway, the W10A south to Leverburgh and Rodel, the W13 round the Bays of east Harris, and the W11, W12 and W14 out to Rhenigidale, Hushinish and Scalpay.
