About Tong
Tong is a crofting township on the east coast of Lewis, about 2½ miles north east of Stornoway. The Gazetteer for Scotland describes it extending east to the Aird of Tong above the rocky shore of Broad Bay, and notes that a former shop and post office became a church for the small Scottish Episcopal community in 2000.
Tong has its own primary, Tong School, which the council lists as taking early years and primary pupils with a Gaelic medium option, and whose catchment is Tong including Milkinghill. Secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute. The W5A bus from Stornoway to Back and Tolsta calls at the Western Isles Hospital and then at Tong School and Aird Tong.
The Crofting Commission's open data lists 25 crofts at Tong, 47 at the Aird of Tong and 7 Tong allotments, all in the parish of Stornoway, the parish Community Land Scotland says the Stornoway Trust's estate includes.
