About Uig
Uig, on the west coast of Lewis, is a district rather than a village: the Gazetteer for Scotland describes a scattered community of small settlements round a sandy bay, and adverts give Uig as the address for Reef, Valtos, Miavaig, Kneep, Carnish, Islivig, Breanish and more. The principal township is Timsgarry (Tuimsgearraidh). The Lewis chessmen were found in the dunes of Uig Bay in 1831.
Uig School at Timsgarry is the primary, and its catchment in the council's directory runs from Aird Uig, Valtos and Reef to Ardroil, Mangersta, Islivig and Breanish. Secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W4 bus runs from Stornoway by Garynahine to Miavaig, the Valtos loop and on to Brenish, with a separate run to Aird Uig. Historic Environment Scotland lists Uig Lodge and the parish church at Baile na Cille at category B.
This is the crofting parish of Uig; the Crofting Commission's open data lists 41 crofts at Valtos, 27 at Breanish and 19 at Kneep, for example.
