About Vatisker
Vatisker is a small, scattered township on the east coast of Lewis, half a mile south of Back, which the Gazetteer for Scotland puts about 6 miles north east of Stornoway. The Gazetteer for Scotland calls it a hamlet, though the croft register lists more than the word suggests: the Crofting Commission's open data lists 60 crofts at Vatisker, filed under the parish of Stornoway. Adverts usually add Back to the address.
Community Land Scotland describes the Stornoway Trust's estate as including the parish of Stornoway, and the Trust says Lord Leverhulme gifted it the land in 1923. The Trust calls itself Scotland's oldest community land trust.
Primary pupils go to Back School, which offers Gaelic medium classes, and the council lists Vatisker in its catchment by name. Secondary pupils go to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway. The W5A bus between Stornoway, Back and Tolsta reaches Vatisker after Tong and Coll, with a Vatisker and Brevig stop in each direction.
